For Pedigree & PetGuinea Pigs
50-Year-Old Cavy Fancy
New Zealand's first cavy club is the New Zealand Cavy Club formed in January 1976 in Wellington and is still going strong today as an Independent Cavy Club. It was also the same time our two original New Zealand unique pedigree breeds were created to help get the New Zealand cavy fancy started.
Independent Cavy Clubs hold pedigree shows under the rules and standards of the New Zealand Cavy Judges Association, which was formed when purebred cavies were first imported from England into New Zealand by Jack Whitworth in 1976. The New Zealand Cavy Judges Association judges have been officiating in New Zealand cavy shows ever since.
New Zealand-created pedigree breeds have the full support from Independent Cavy Clubs, who are the only cavy clubs that supports them and the exhibitors who wish to breed and show them. We believe it is important our New Zealand breeds have equal status, rights and opportunities for exhibition with imported pedigree breeds at cavy shows in New Zealand.
Exhibiting guinea pigs is a rewarding, challenging and fun hobby and is great for people of all ages. Make new friends with other guinea pig enthusiasts. Showing your guinea pigs is a lovely way to bond with them, keep a closer eye on their health and hopefully win some titles, championship points, ribbons and prizes together.
Please find your nearest Independent Cavy Club below and visit a show. There are many pedigree and pet shows happening throughout the year and new members and visitors are always welcome.

NEW ZEALAND UNIQUE AND RARE GUINEA PIGS
New Zealand Unique and Rare Guinea Pigs is an Independent Cavy Club for the preservation and exhibition of New Zealand's Iconic pedigree guinea pig (cavy) breeds.
We use the word 'unique' to describe pedigree guinea pig breeds that were created in New Zealand-by-New Zealand cavy judges and achieved full show standards by the New Zealand Cavy Judges Association, which was formed in 1976 and have been officiating in New Zealand cavy shows ever since.
The New Zealand unique and rare breeds are New Zealand Plume, Tweed, Panda, New Zealand Peruvian and formerly Bonnet. They are a significant part of New Zealand's guinea pig fancy's history and achievements, which should be protected and celebrated. Additionally, our cavy club supports imported rare breeds when needed, like the Dark Eyed White.
